Disclaimer & terms of use
Please read this before relying on any verdict. By using CarValidator you agree to the following.
Informational use only
CarValidator is an informational resource for used-car buyers. Everything on this site — verdicts, known issues, fault codes, repair-cost estimates and checklists — is general guidance, not professional, mechanical, legal or financial advice.
No guarantee about any specific car
Our verdicts describe documented, community-sourced reliability patterns for an engine family across many vehicles. They cannot predict the condition of the specific car in front of you. Maintenance history, prior repairs, driving conditions and abuse vary enormously between individual cars. A 'Proven' engine can still have been ruined by neglect; an 'Avoid' engine can occasionally have been kept perfectly.
Always inspect in person
Never buy a used car on the strength of an online verdict alone. Use the pre-purchase checklist on each engine page as a starting point, scan the car for fault codes, and where possible have an independent mechanic inspect it before you pay.
Accuracy & sources
Entries are compiled from owner forums, technical documentation and publicly reported failure patterns, and are reviewed for specificity. Manufacturers revise engines mid-production and new failure modes emerge over time, so information may be incomplete or become outdated. We make no warranty as to accuracy or completeness.
Repair-cost estimates
Cost ranges are rough indications to help you gauge risk. Actual prices vary widely by country, parts source, labour rate and severity. Treat them as ballpark figures, not quotes.
Limitation of liability
You use this site at your own risk. CarValidator and its contributors accept no liability for any loss, cost or damage arising from decisions made using this information, including any vehicle purchase.
No affiliation
We are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any vehicle manufacturer. Brand names, model names and engine codes are used for identification and reference only and remain the property of their respective owners.
