Known Issues
Gates bulletin TB042 covers AFB, AKE, AKN, AYM, BAU, BCZ, BDG, BDH and BFC and says engines up to 2003 suffer camshaft wear from inadequate lubrication; early AFB/AKN are reported to wear lobes and drop rocker arms. Later engines (BAU/BDH/BCZ) are reported to use roller rockers; no engine-number cutoff was found.
Fix / Workaround: Inspect cams under the covers before buying; budget for both heads' cams and roller rockers.
The Bosch VP44 pump (0470 506 002) fails mostly in its electronic control unit on 1997–2003 cars: cutting out at idle or driving, or no start. Reported codes: 89 injection begin error, 01318 pump control module no communication, 00550 start of injection regulation.
