Frequently asked questions

Which Bmw 5 Series E39 engine is the most reliable?

323i / 523i 2.5 (M52 / M52TU) — Maint. Sensitive verdict. The 170 hp M52 straight-six of the E39 (1995–2000) and early E46 (1998–2000). The base engine is excellent: timing chain, iron-lined or later Alusil bores, very long-lived if the oil and coolant are right. The pre-1998 M52 had single VANOS and Nikasil bores that sulphur-rich fuel could wear (BMW replaced blocks at the time); the 1998+ M52TU has double VANOS. At 25+ years old what decides the car is the cooling system, the crankcase ventilation and the VANOS seals — all fixable for a few hundred euros each.
