Reliability, common problems and owner reviews for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 e-GMP rear motor (Ioniq 5 / EV6). Check this before you buy used.

The motor itself in the Ioniq 5 and EV6 is not the story. The story is the ICCU, the combined on-board charger and DC-DC converter that keeps the 12V battery alive. When it fails, the 12V goes flat and the car can lose drive power, sometimes after a pop from the unit. Hyundai recall 24V-204 (March 2024) and the expanded 24V-868, and Kia's parallel campaigns (SC302 / 24V-200, later 24V-867), cover a large share of 2022–2024 cars. The expanded Hyundai list includes the Ioniq 6 (2023–2025). The NHTSA ICCU campaign pages read for this entry do not list the Kia EV9 or the EV3. The first software remedy was not enough, so Hyundai in April 2026 extended ICCU warranty cover substantially (reported as 15 years / 180,000 miles in the US). Consumer Reports has tied the fault to a minority of cars, not all of them, and it still moves the buying decision. A car with the latest recall closed and no charging warnings is a very good EV. One with an open campaign, or a history of a flat 12V, is not.

Known Issues

ICCU failure flattens the 12V and can stop the carcritical

The ICCU charges the 12V from the main pack. A failed unit (often a blown fuse after a stressed transistor) leaves the car unable to start or, in the worse reports, losing power while moving. DTC P1A9096 is the one dealers look for.

Fix / Workaround: Check the VIN against the Hyundai/Kia ICCU recalls. Confirm the software and, if required, the replacement unit are done.

Repair cost: €0–€2500

Typically appears after: 30,000 km

Replacement units have failed againrecurring

Some cars needed a second ICCU after the first recall repair. The 2026 warranty extension exists because the maker does not treat the issue as closed.

Fix / Workaround: Ask specifically whether the ICCU has already been replaced, and keep the paperwork.

Repair cost: €0–€2500

Typically appears after: 50,000 km

Year Cutoffs

2024: Before — 2022–early 2024: assume the ICCU recall applies until a VIN check says it does not.. After — Later cars are improved and many are outside the original campaigns. Still ask about ICCU warranty cover..

Mileage Thresholds

After 60,000 km: VIN recall check. A car that has already eaten one ICCU needs the paperwork.
