The Elantra petrols span the dependable port-injected Gamma 1.6 (G4FC), the direct-injection 1.6 GDI (G4FD — peppier, with the usual DI intake carbon over time) and the 2.0 Nu (G4NA). All are chain-driven and fundamentally sturdy; note that the larger Nu/Theta GDI families saw bearing-failure recalls on certain (mainly US-market/turbo) engines, so on a GDI it's worth checking the engine history. The port-injected 1.6 is the lowest-worry choice; the GDI versions reward clean oil and the odd intake decarbon.
