The 8v (Z19DT, 120hp) is the simpler, tougher choice; the 16v (Z19DTH, 150hp) is quicker but adds the notorious intake swirl-flap risk — the flaps can break off and get drawn into the engine, causing serious damage — plus DPF clogging, injector and EGR wear. With swirl flaps deleted/checked and disciplined oil, it's a capable high-mileage engine; the 8v avoids the worst of it.
