The 1.4/1.5 TSI (EA211 — shared across the Tiguan, Ateca, Octavia and Golf) is the economical entry petrol: belt-driven and far more robust than VAG's old chain-driven small TSIs, with ACT cylinder-deactivation. It works a little hard hauling the big seven-seat SUV but is fundamentally sound. Cautions are the cam-belt service (keep to schedule), direct-injection intake carbon over time, and — specific to the 1.5 EVO — an early-production low-load hesitation/kangaroo issue that software updates largely cured. A serviced car with the 1.5 software done is a good engine; the 2.0 TSI suits the body better.
