Which Volkswagen Passat B9 engine is the most reliable?
1.5 TSI eHybrid / iV (plug-in) — Maint. Sensitive verdict. On the new Tiguan, Tayron, Passat, Golf 8.5, Kodiaq and Superb the plug-in is a belt-driven 1.5 TSI plus a motor in a six-speed dual-clutch. System output is 204 hp (DUCB) or 272 hp (DUCA); the petrol tune differs, the motor does not. The Cupra Terramar eHybrid 204 is this DUCB. A Terramar 2.0 petrol at the same 204 hp is not this row. The complaint that fills a 156-reply Motor-Talk thread, from April 2025 to September 2026, is not a dead mechatronics unit. It is a single hard jerk in the first 300 metres, around 30 km/h, on a light throttle in E-mode, usually once per trip. Owners of 2025 Tiguans, a November 2024 Passat 204 hp and a Tayron describe the same hit. Several can force it about 60–65 seconds after start, as the passenger-airbag lamp in the mirror goes out. Workshops find no fault code. One owner stopped it by switching the emergency-braking aid off and back on — the car turns that aid on again at the next start, and he read the jerk as that system grabbing the brakes for a fraction of a second. In March 2026 another owner was told VW had an update, which the workshop called PV5, and the jerk did not come back. One Tiguan had already received a new DSG at 7,000 km for something else, and the jerk appeared only after that new box, so a worn clutch does not explain it. The older Golf GTE and Tiguan eHybrid DQ400e mechatronics and seal failures are a previous gearbox generation. Do not price this jerk as that repair.
