Frequently asked questions
Which Bmw 3 Series E46 engine is the most reliable?
316i 1.9 (M43) — Reliable verdict. The 105 hp 1.9 M43 is the simple eight-valve four of the early E46 (1998–2001; the 316i used it from 1999). No Valvetronic, no turbo, port injection and a timing chain — it is slow in a 1,300 kg 3 Series, but it is the least complicated petrol engine BMW put in this car. What goes wrong is age: the upper plastic timing-chain guide rail can break, the valve cover and oil-pan gaskets weep, and the E46 cooling plastics are the real threat. With the cooling system renewed it will cover very high mileage.
Which Bmw 3 Series E46 engines should you avoid?
None of the Bmw 3 Series E46 engines listed are rated "Problematic" or "Avoid" — but always check the service history before buying.
What are the most common Bmw 3 Series E46 problems?
