Reliability, common problems and owner reviews for the Bmw 3 Series E46 328i / 528i 2.8 (M52 / M52TU). Check this before you buy used.
The 193 hp M52 straight-six of the E39 (1995–2000) and early E46 (1998–2000). The base engine is excellent: timing chain, iron-lined or later Alusil bores, very long-lived if the oil and coolant are right. The pre-1998 M52 had single VANOS and Nikasil bores that sulphur-rich fuel could wear (BMW replaced blocks at the time); the 1998+ M52TU has double VANOS. At 25+ years old what decides the car is the cooling system, the crankcase ventilation and the VANOS seals — all fixable for a few hundred euros each.

Known Issues
The weak link of every M43/M52/M54 car of this age is not the engine but the cooling system: the plastic expansion tank and its cap crack, the radiator's plastic end tanks and upper-hose neck split, early water pumps have a plastic impeller that slips or breaks, and the thermostat sticks. A sudden coolant loss overheats an aluminium-head engine within minutes (warped head, head-gasket failure; the M52TU/M54 aluminium block can also pull its head bolt threads).
Fix / Workaround: Treat the whole system as a service item: radiator, expansion tank, water pump with a metal impeller, thermostat and hoses together every ~120,000 km or 8–10 years. Watch the temperature gauge — on these cars the needle sits mid-scale until it is already too late, so a coolant-level warning means stop now.
Repair cost: €300–€700
Typically appears after: 120,000 km
The CCV separator and its hoses clog with sludge or crack, especially in cold climates. Symptoms: oil consumption, oil in the intake and throttle body, a whistle or lean codes, smoke on start-up, and in bad cases the dipstick or oil filler cap being sucked/pushed. Some M54s also use oil past the piston rings even with a healthy CCV.
Fix / Workaround: Replace the CCV valve and all its hoses (and the dipstick tube O-ring) as one job. Measure oil use over 1,000 km; more than about 0.5 l/1,000 km after a CCV job points at the rings.
Repair cost: €150–€450
Typically appears after: 120,000 km
The rubber O-rings in the double-VANOS unit harden; the engine loses low-rev torque, idles roughly and stores cam timing faults. Rattle from the VANOS unit is also common.
Fix / Workaround: Aftermarket Viton seal kits fix it for good; clean or replace the solenoids at the same time.
Repair cost: €150–€450
Typically appears after: 150,000 km
Valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket leak with age — oil onto the exhaust manifold (smell, smoke) or down the front of the engine onto the belts.
Fix / Workaround: Replace both gaskets; check the belts and pulleys if oil has reached them.
Repair cost: €150–€400
Typically appears after: 120,000 km

After 120,000 km: Cooling system and CCV are due if there is no record.

Pre-Purchase Checklist
- ☐Remove the oil filler cap at idle — strong suction or a whistle means a failed CCV
- ☐Proof of radiator, expansion tank, water pump and thermostat replacement
- ☐No hesitation low in the revs (VANOS)
- ☐Oil consumption over the last service interval
- ☐Temperature steady after a 20-minute drive

Is a used Bmw 3 Series E46 328i / 528i 2.8 (M52 / M52TU) worth buying?
Fine if serviced correctly — but it punishes neglect hard. History and the right consumables matter.
