Reliability, common problems and owner reviews for the Byd Atto 2 BYD Blade small front motor (Atto 2 / Dolphin Surf). Check this before you buy used.
The Atto 2 (about 130 kW / 177 hp) and the Dolphin Surf — the European Seagull, the Brazilian Dolphin Mini — are the small front-motor BYDs. European owner threads for the Atto 2 itself did not turn up a motor or pack fault in this pass. The Dolphin Mini in Brazil and Mexico did, and it is the same small car. On dolphinbyd.com.br (15 August 2026) a Mini went completely dead, would only move on an external pack, and died again if that pack was taken off. BYD Assistance got it to a dealer. The diagnosis was the 12V, and the dealer did not have one in stock. On the BYD Owners México Facebook group (3 October 2024) a Mini showed 'EV Power limited' and would only start with a jump pack. The dealer tightened a loose 12V terminal, scanned it clear, and the fault was back the next day. A reply on that post said a 12V replacement at the dealer cured the same message; the original poster ended up buying a battery elsewhere for 3,500 pesos because the dealer did not. Reclame Aqui, December 2025: a six-month-old Mini, two no-starts, the first visit written up as a software update with the battery left in the car. A separate September 2026 complaint describes smoke and melted plastic from the 12V bay at 24,000 km, a dealer who refused warranty because the 12-month battery cover had ended, and a quote of R$1,540. That is one owner's account of a thermal event, not a count of fires. Do not copy the German Atto 3 12V threads onto an Atto 2 as if they were measured on it. The mechanism — a small lead-acid battery that locks the car — is the same family of complaint, on the smaller car, in Brazil and Mexico.

Known Issues
dolphinbyd.com.br thread 7455, August 2026. The car was silent. A jump pack woke it and it died as soon as the pack was removed. The dealer in Barueri diagnosed the 12V and had to order one. On the Mexican owners' group the same silence arrives as 'EV Power limited'. A loose terminal was the first dealer answer and did not hold; a new 12V did, for the people who got one. One owner paid 3,500 pesos outside the dealer. The Atto 3's German forum is a different model. This is the small car's own posts.
Fix / Workaround: Leave it locked for two days. Ask whether the 12V has already been replaced, and whether the dealer has the part on the shelf rather than on a truck. A lithium 12V is not a DIY swap: Brazilian owners on the same forum warn that a later LFP auxiliary battery is not charged like a lead-acid one.

Reclame Aqui, 15 December 2025, Campinas. A Dolphin Mini bought in May 2025 had already had two 12V failures at six months. The first dealer visit called it a system update and did not change the battery. The second failure was the day of the complaint. That is the pattern to refuse: a reboot written up as a repair, and the same battery still in the car.
Fix / Workaround: If it has been jump-started once, the invoice has to say a new 12V, not 'software'. A second no-start with the original battery is this complaint.
0Typically appears after: 5,000 km
Reclame Aqui, 11 September 2026. The owner describes smoke, melted plastic and a burnt smell from the 12V compartment at 24,000 km, still inside the vehicle warranty. The Brasília dealer, in the owner's account, refused the battery warranty because more than 12 months had passed and wanted R$1,540 for a new one, without a written technical report. The owner calls it a batch fault. One complaint. It is not 'these cars catch fire'. It is the reason a hot smell from the 12V bay is a stop-driving event, and the reason a 12-month battery cover is shorter than the car's warranty.
Fix / Workaround: Any hot smell or haze from the 12V area: stop, and do not accept a verbal 'out of battery warranty' without the car warranty in writing. Photograph the bay.

Mileage Thresholds
After 10,000 km: The Brazilian and Mexican 12V failures are inside the first year, not at high mileage.
After 30,000 km: The smoke complaint is one car at 24,000 km. No front-motor or Blade-pack replacement pattern was found for the Atto 2 or the Surf.
Pre-Purchase Checklist
- ☐Dolphin Surf / Mini is the smaller motor; Atto 2 is the 130 kW car — the 12V posts above are the Mini
- ☐No European Atto 2 thread was found to copy; do not treat an Atto 3 forum as this car
- ☐Leave it locked, then see if it opens
- ☐A previous no-start must have a new 12V on the invoice, not only a software note
- ☐Hot smell from the 12V bay is a stop, not a reboot
- ☐Ask which chemistry the auxiliary battery is before anyone puts a lead-acid charger on it
