Reliability, common problems and owner reviews for the Dongfeng Box Dongfeng Box front motor. Check this before you buy used.
Two different owner problems, and neither is a burnt motor. Euro NCAP in 2025 gave the Box a poor result after spot welds opened, an airbag did not hold pressure, and the doors stayed locked. That is the body, and it is the fact that should stop a purchase on its own if you care what the shell does in a crash. Separately, owners are being stranded by the guess-o-meter and by the charge socket. In the English-speaking Dongfeng Box Facebook group, at 2°C a full car lost 30 km of indicated range in 3 km at 94 km/h; the driver had done 243 km from full and was told by another owner they had gone from driving to a tow truck in 10 km. They say the last 60 km on the display can be about 6. On Drive2 a Minsk car lost the charge-port lock pin at 201 km and would not accept a plug. A Vitebsk car at 6,555 km stopped taking both AC and DC; a commenter on that log had already had the 12V changed. A Russian owner write-up describes the lock pin freezing after rain or a wash, so DC dies while a slow AC charge may still work. There is no thread of motors or packs being opened. There is a thread of people standing next to a car that says it has range and does not.
Known Issues
In the 2025 test the body's spot welds failed, airbag pressure was not held, and the doors stayed locked after the impact. This is not an engine verdict. It is the reason a cheap EV can still be the wrong car. Read the NCAP sheet for the exact variant; a later structural change would be a different car, and none was in front of the owners quoted here.
Fix / Workaround: Read the Euro NCAP result for the VIN's variant before you negotiate. Do not trade it against a long warranty.
0Owners in the English Facebook group watched the remaining kilometres fall about ten times faster than the road passing, at motorway speed, just above freezing. One went from a displayed 90 km to zero in about 10 km and needed a tow. Another saw 2 kWh go in to move the display from 9% to 11%, which is not a healthy reading. They tell each other not to trust the last 60 km, and to charge at 40% rather than 30% because the percentage then falls in front of their eyes. The pack is not described as dying. The estimate is.
Fix / Workaround: Do the test drive from full, in the cold if you can, and watch the display against the kilometres. Believe a car that has already been towed for this.
Repair cost: €0–€200
Typically appears after: 1,000 km
Drive2: at 201 km the lock pin in the socket failed and the car refused a charge. At 6,555 km another car took neither a wall socket nor a fast charger, and the service was still looking at the lock and the charging controller days later. A separate owner account says water in the actuator freezes the pin, so the fast charger will not start. The car can be left with a full-looking battery that you cannot add to.
Fix / Workaround: Lock and unlock a DC plug and an AC plug on the test. In winter, look at the pin. A car that has already had the socket or the charging controller changed needs the paperwork.
Repair cost: €0–€600
Typically appears after: 200 km
Mileage Thresholds
After 5,000 km: Charge lock and the 12V show up early in the Drive2 logs. The range lie shows up on the first cold trip.

- ☐A cold motorway run where the displayed kilometres fall with the road
