History-Dependent

Reliability, common problems and owner reviews for the Mg HS 1.5 T DCT / 2.0 T (MG HS). Check this before you buy used.

The current HS is sold as a 1.5 turbo with a 7-speed dual-clutch (15S4C, about 162 hp) or a 2.0 turbo with a torque-converter automatic (20L4E). This row carries both because the catalog lists them together; they are not the same gearbox. The MG EHS plug-in — a flat spot around 45 mph, a 6-speed DCT paired with a 4-speed EV drive — is a different car, and those threads must not be pasted onto this petrol HS. Owner forums read for this pass (MGEVs and the usual UK groups) did not produce a repeatable European failure of the 1.5T engine or of its dual-clutch: no mileage, no part, no code. Content-farm pages that quote clutch-pack replacement intervals were not used. What is repeatable on the MG4 and the ZS Hybrid+, and only there, is a 12V that flattens and software that misbehaves. Test those on an HS. Do not pretend they are a measured HS fault. Prefer the 2.0 automatic if the driving is queues, because a dual-clutch is the unproven part of the 1.5 car, not because a forum has already condemned it. A car with no stamps is the gamble. A car with stamps and a smooth queue test is not a known write-off.

Known Issues

No European 1.5T failure file that survives a source checkminor

Searches for the petrol HS 1.5 DCT on owner forums did not turn up a thread with a mechanism: a judder at a stated mileage, a mechatronics code, or a dealer fix that more than one owner confirmed. Pages that rank 'MG reliability' and then name a clutch pack were set aside. Absence of that thread is not a 200,000 km test. It is the reason this page will not invent a DCT epidemic the EHS plug-in does not entitle us to.

Fix / Workaround: Ten minutes in a queue, including a hill start. A shunt you cannot live with is a reason to leave this car. It is not yet a published failure pattern.

The 2.0 automatic is a different gearboxminor

20L4E is the 2.0 turbo with a conventional automatic. It does not inherit a dual-clutch complaint even if one later appears for the 1.5. It also does not inherit a clean record: this pass found no high-mileage teardown of that 2.0 in Europe either. The buying difference is which unproven gearbox you are sitting on, not a proven winner.

Fix / Workaround: Read the gearbox, not the HS badge. 1.5 DCT and 2.0 automatic are not interchangeable conclusions.

Do not import the EHS plug-in flat spotminor

The plug-in HS (EHS) hesitates where its electric ratios and the 6-speed DCT hand over, often described around 45 mph. That hardware is not in the petrol 1.5T or the 2.0. A review or a forum post about an EHS is not evidence this petrol car does the same thing.

Fix / Workaround: If the car you are buying is a plug-in, you are on the wrong page. If it is petrol, ignore EHS posts about a flat spot.

Mileage Thresholds

After 30,000 km: Queue test and service stamps. There is no failure mileage to wait for, because no pattern was found.

After 120,000 km: Still no European teardown in the sources used. Oil history is the whole mechanical file.

Pre-Purchase Checklist

  • ☐Confirm 1.5 DCT (15S4C) or 2.0 automatic (20L4E) on this VIN
  • ☐Not the EHS plug-in — different handover, different page
  • ☐Ten minutes of queue driving, including a hill start
  • ☐Oil stamps in the book, not a verbal history
  • ☐Screen survives the drive; a reboot is an MG habit on other models, not a measured HS fault
  • ☐Warranty years left, and whether they transfer
