Reliability, common problems and owner reviews for the Mitsubishi Outlander IV 2.5 PHEV (4B12). Check this before you buy used.

The 2023-on Outlander PHEV uses a chain-driven 2.5 4B12. The petrol half is not what strands the car. Canadian and northern-US owners of the 2023 and 2024 North American cars describe a drive battery with no heater — the 2014–2022 Outlander PHEV had one — and a heat pump that stops making cabin heat at about −15°C. On outlanderforums.com thread 887 a 2023 car at about −40°C showed 'Battery is too cold to start the vehicle, plug in the charger or wait for the temperature to rise' and would not move. The dealer said Mitsubishi knows and is working on software, and that at around −30°C the car eventually will not start. Jumping the 12V does nothing, because the lockout is the traction battery's temperature, not a flat accessory battery. Plugging in does not keep heating the pack once the charge is finished: owners say the charger disconnects and there is no pack heater to run. Myoutlanderphev.com thread 6085 says the same cars were promoted with a battery heater that the 2023 and 2024 North American specification does not have. A mild European winter is not Calgary. Confirm on the VIN whether this car has a drive-battery heater before you treat a Canadian no-start as your car's future. Do not import the old Outlander's citric-acid heater-matrix clog. That part is not this generation's failure.

Known Issues

No drive-battery heater, and a cold pack will not start the enginecritical

Outlanderforums thread 887 and myoutlanderphev thread 6085. The 2023 and 2024 North American cars have no resistive heater in the drive battery. The computer will not crank the petrol engine once the pack is too cold, so the message is 'Battery is too cold to start the vehicle'. Owners in Calgary left the car for days until the air rose to about −25 to −20°C, or towed it into a heated garage and put a space heater near the pack. A booster pack on the 12V does not clear it. The dealer advice in the thread was a software update and an admission that extreme cold can still leave the car dead. Forum posts call this a class action over the missing heater and over brochure text that listed one. This page has not read a court filing. The 2.5 itself is not the part that fails to start.

Fix / Workaround: If the car will see −25°C or below, ask the dealer, against the VIN, whether a drive-battery heater is fitted. A Canadian 2023 answer is not automatically a European 2025 answer. A 12V jump is the wrong tool.

Heat pump gives up around −15°Crecurring

Myoutlanderphev thread 6085: owners of the 2023 car say the heat pump stops producing cabin heat below about −15°C. Below that, heat is the petrol engine. Remote start through the app does not light the engine, so a pre-heat while the car is locked does not work in that cold. The cabin then takes a long time once you are in it and the engine is allowed to run. This is the heating system, not a cracked 4B12.

Fix / Workaround: On a cold morning, time how long the cabin actually heats, and whether a remote pre-heat does anything. Below about −15°C, expect the engine to be the heater.

The 2.5 is the simple halfminor

The 4B12 in this generation is a naturally aspirated, chain-driven Atkinson petrol. The threads above do not record it as the failed part. The previous Outlander's blocked heater matrix, cleaned with citric acid, belongs to that older car's heater. Do not buy a flush for a fault this generation has not shown.

Fix / Workaround: Ordinary oil service. Spend the inspection on the cold-start message and the heat pump, not on a petrol rebuild.

Year Cutoffs

2023: Before — 2014–2022 Outlander PHEV: those cars have the drive-battery heater. Their heater-matrix complaints are not this page.. After — 2023 and 2024 North American cars: owners and the forum's reading of the spec say the heater was deleted when the heat pump arrived. Check a European VIN separately. A 2025 comment on the same forum said the heater was still absent; that is one post, not a brochure..

Mileage Thresholds

After 5,000 km: The no-start is temperature, not kilometres. It can happen on a new car the first hard winter.

After 150,000 km: Still no petrol-engine pattern in these cold-weather threads. The question remains the pack heater.

Pre-Purchase Checklist

  • ☐VIN: does this car have a drive-battery heater, or only the heat pump
  • ☐The message 'Battery is too cold to start' is a pack lockout — a 12V jump will not clear it
  • ☐Heat from cold below −15°C has to come from the engine, and remote start may not light it
  • ☐No hybrid warning on a normal day, and it charges
  • ☐Do not buy a heater-matrix flush aimed at the 2014–2022 car
  • ☐The 4B12 oil service is the ordinary item, not the regret
