Which Volkswagen ID. Buzz engine is the most reliable?

APP310 / APP550 (MEB rear motor) — Maint. Sensitive verdict. The rear drive unit to ask about is the APP310, still fitted to ID.3 Pro and Pro S, ID.4 up to about the fourth quarter of 2023, ID.5, base ID.Buzz to 2024, Enyaq 50 and 60, Elroq 50 and 60, Q4 e-tron rear-drive to 2024, and the base Cupra Born. The European Ford Explorer and Capri, the ID.7 and the Cupra Tavascan use this same MEB rear unit. The later, higher-output unit is the APP550. EV Clinic, 10 May 2026, published a series of APP310 teardowns. The latest motor they opened had seized at 214,000 km after the owner kept driving a buzz. About 200 ml of reduction-gear oil was left, and they date the loss to around 180,000 km, with black residue on the internals. They first wrote that the unit has no drain plug. A correction the same day says that was wrong and the plug is there. What they did not withdraw: four bearings are not sold as parts, VW specifies no oil change, and they have now seen the low-oil pattern more than once. They tell owners not to ignore a hum from the rear axle and to change the reduction-gear oil about every 100,000 km even though Wolfsburg does not. That is one specialist workshop's series, not a statement that every APP310 dies at 180,000 km. On Bolidenforum a Cupra Born owner had the rear-axle noise from 89,000 km, a bearing replacement (the whole motor) at 100,500 km under warranty, and the same noise back by 123,000 km. A car that already hums is the one to leave. A quiet APP550 is a different unit.
