Engine codes: BKP, BMP
Reliability, common problems and owner reviews for the Volkswagen Passat B6 2.0 TDI 140hp PD (BKP / BMP). Check this before you buy used.
CRITICAL: unlike the same-size 2.0 PD in the Golf/Octavia/A3 (which is SAFE), the longitudinal Passat's BKP has the balance-shaft module driving the oil pump through a hex shaft that wears/deforms — oil pressure drops and the engine is destroyed. Add cracked cylinder heads and injector issues. This is the textbook 'avoid the early B6 2.0 TDI PD'. Choose the 1.9 TDI or a 2008+ common-rail 2.0 instead.
Known Issues
The hex shaft driving the oil pump off the balance shaft wears/deforms → oil pressure loss → engine destruction. The defining BKP failure (engine noise / oil-pressure warning precede it).
Fix / Workaround: Retrofit the uprated balance-shaft/oil-pump assembly if not already done; ANY idle rattle or oil-pressure light = stop immediately. Even so, this engine is best avoided.
Repair cost: €250–€3500
Typically appears after: 100,000 km
BKP/BMP are prone to cylinder head cracks.
Fix / Workaround: Check for coolant loss / combustion gases in coolant; head replacement is costly.
Repair cost: €800–€2500
Typically appears after: 150,000 km
PD unit-injectors fail at high mileage; EGR stops working.
Fix / Workaround: Scan before buying; clean/replace EGR.
Repair cost: €300–€1200

Pre-Purchase Checklist
- ☐Best avoided — prefer 1.9 TDI or 2008+ common-rail 2.0
- ☐If considering: confirm uprated balance-shaft/oil-pump assembly was fitted
- ☐Idle metallic rattle / oil-pressure light = walk away
- ☐Check coolant for head-crack signs
- ☐Scan for injector/EGR codes
